What he has to say
Dear parents/students,
I am Mr Anthony Fok, an Economics tutor.
I am assuming that you have stumbled across this website because you wish to improve your Economics grades. Indeed, in the GCE ‘A’ level examination, examiners are becoming more demanding. They are looking out for higher order thinking skills (Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation) in your answers. Simply memorizing lecture notes will not distinguish you from other candidates and may even impede you from answering the questions comprehensively. To do well, you need to apply economic principles to current economic events, say the recent Eurozone Crisis. You also need to integrate the different topics learnt to construct a coherent line of argument and reconcile conflicting ideas. In addition, you must also be able to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of the various economic policies learnt in the lecture notes. Finally and most importantly, your ideas should ‘flow’ from one to another, be logical, clear and concise. Examiners want “quality” instead of “quantity” of response, and expect you to demonstrate the thinking process. I thus make it a point to include examples of real world Economic events and personal anecdotes, to show students the thinking process required.
I am confident of my abilities to make Economics am more manageable subject for you, even one that is interesting and not the chore you may find it to be now. Doing well in Economics is not impossible, so long as you have an open mind and are willing to learn, and learn in the right way.
I treat my students like friends, and they all know they can count on me when they face difficulties while revising. Many of my former students have moved on to top local and overseas universities such as University of Cambridge and London School of Economics and Political Science, and we continue to keep in touch.
I have always been passionate in Economics ever since I took it up. To me, it is a subject that is not only fascinating, but also extremely useful and practical in real life. Beyond helping you attain that A, I would like to inspire you to see Economics in this light as well.
I look forward to seeing you in class and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours, academic or otherwise.
Warmest regards,
Anthony Fok
